@Momentum sat hunched over at his post, the warmth of his personal heater slowly lulling him to sleep. He had been on watch for the last 8 hours, and he was due for a replacement any minute now. Of course, knowing @Creeper it would probably be another double shift. He was always oversleeping now that he was put on engineering duty, and @Momentum couldn't really blame him. It was less grueling than patrols, but the mental strain could really get to a man after awhile. It took a certain kind of mindset to maintain these junked up transporters, and @Momentum really wasn’t cut out for it. He preferred the simple day to day tasks assigned to him; it let him autopilot for the most part, leaving his mind to wander to his bed back in the bunker. He hoped @The Shingler was still up. He has been on kitchen duty today, and their shifts generally ran pretty late. Who knows, maybe he could sneak a few leftover biscuits back for them to share.
As he was reminiscing about what he would do to @The Shingler once he got home, @Momentum noticed movement in the field in front of him. Pulling out his binoculars, he focused on a spot just over the horizon. Surely it must have been some trick of the dawn light, or maybe a fox was slipping over the open ground towards the treeline. However, as he watched, the unmistakable shape of a rover emerged from behind a snow drift. @Momentum jerked back, reaching over his seat to the alarm, and yanking on the cord. The shill screech rang out into the early morning air while he fumbled with the keys to his transporter. This could only mean one thing, Strauss Gaming was launching an attack.
They was another community to survive the fall of civilization, this one without any religion and filled with gays and transsexuals. Though the two communities share many similarities, their difference in religion (or lack there of) and orientation had lead them towards a bitter rivalry. Just last summer LFG had raided the Strauss harvest, leaving them without stores of food for the winter. They had hoped this would encourage them to seek new territory to the south, but it was obvious now that they meant to destroy LFG at all costs.
Finally slipping his key into the ignition, @Momentum quickly peeled out, turning to head in the direction of the forward camp. Hopefully the artillery would be set up to mount a proper defense before the enemy line reached the second field. If not, this would be a bloody battle, and he had a feeling the Strauss would be fighting to the last man. As he crested the hill, he saw a frenzied battle already taking place at their artillery line. The enemy must have mounted a surprise raid to scatter their defenses, but the dropout crews seemed to be holding them off for now. @Momentum reached over the the passenger side dash and revved up his front facing machine guns, turning his transport to face the retreating Strauss raiders. He let off a few controlled bursts, but they were already disappearing into the tree line, no doubt regrouping to attack with the main platoon.
The artillery crews were scrambling to position their guns, but it was obviously a futile attempt. They had lost too many of their crews to properly man them. @Momentum pulled up to the officers tent, and leapt out of his transport.
“God dammit @Momentum, where have you been!?” Demanded @Chinaball, who lead the main defensive front of LFG.
“I’ve been high-tailing my ass back here to warn you!” @Momentum shouted, cutting off another scathing remark. “This was only a diversion! The Strauss are mounting an all out attack on our defenses, they’ll be here any minute now!”
“GOD FUCKING DAMMIT,” yelled @Chinaball, slamming his fist on the folding table in front of him. “There’s no way we can hold off their attack here, @Ancient Llama, I want these incompetent fucks ready to haul ass ASAP”.
“Yes sir!” saluted @Ancient Llama, as he hurried out of the tent to see to his orders. As he left, @Momentum could see @Chinaball’s face going white as he contemplated his next move. It was obvious they couldn’t hold off the more heavily armored rovers that the Strauss would have leading their vanguard, not without their artillery support. But they would have to retreat through miles of open ground to reach their bunker, and at the rate the Strauss were moving, they would definitely be within range of their mounted guns. There didn’t seem to be any good options here, at least that @Momentum could think of. @Chinaball let out a slow sigh, his eyes meeting @Momentum’s with a resolute expression on his face.
“We’ll have to leave behind a skeleton crew to buy us time while we retreat, and I’m sorry to say you’re the only officer I trust to lead them”. He said, his eyes never leaving @Momentum’s. His heart began to race as he considered the magnitude of what he had just heard. His hands shook, so he stuffed them in his pockets, and gave a slow nod. He knew it was true, as much as he wished it were not. None of the lime boi shitstains they had manning the artillery had the experience or balls to properly command the defenses. Already he was thinking of a strategy for holding them off, while hopefully preserving the lives of his men. It seemed nearly impossible, but @Momentum had to hope; for @The Shingler’s sake, if not for his own.
“I understand sir, and I won’t let you down”. Surprisingly his voice sounded calm and assured, despite what he felt.
“May @The Overlord be with you, you captain,” @Chinaball said as he gave him a final salute, before walking out of the tent to give orders to the rest of the men. @Momentum stood there for a short time, his mind racing, and his feet seemingly frozen to the ground. He allowed his mind to wander one last time to the bunker, where @The Shingler would be finishing his shift in the kitchens, before he pushed it from his mind. He would survive. He had to. With that, he turned towards the entrance to the tent, and stepped outside.
